Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon that provides cloud computing services, established a Builder Studio in Melbourne, Australia, to hone a culture of experimentation and drive innovation. The studio focuses on innovative technologies such as digital twins for the development of new products and process optimisation. fischertechnik’s Training Factory 4.0 is one of the demonstration and learning tools used at the Builder Studio.

Many companies face the challenge of managing innovation, developing new products and optimising their processes, which requires investments that many business leaders are reluctant to make. This is why methods and facilities that require less capital are in popular demand, as they reduce the risk of bad investments. “Companies want to implement innovations but often don’t know how to proceed. The Builder Studio is the ideal place to develop solutions”, says Adrian de Luca, Director Cloud Acceleration APAC at Amazon AWS.

Encompassing 350 square metres, the AWS Builder Studio features a dedicated workshop where developers and engineers can work on complex electronic projects such as custom Internet of Things (IoT) controls and industrial interfaces, allowing them to design and assemble their prototypes on-site. The facilities used at the Builder Studio include a Training Factory 4.0 by fischertechnik. “This allows logistical and production-specific processes to be simulated”, explains Felix Witzelmaier, who works in Business Development at fischertechnik. “Processes can also be represented by a digital twin”, he adds.

The AWS Builder Studio provides companies with an accessible introduction to future-proof technologies. With immersive showrooms, innovative technology demonstrations and hands-on workshops, the innovation hub helps customers develop industry-specific solutions while applying new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). Managers, engineers and software developers are provided with the opportunity to design and optimise products and processes in a digital environment. Once clients are satisfied with a solution, they can begin to develop their digital prototype into a real one, allowing innovations to be realised through manageable investments. Melbourne’s Builder Studio is the second establishment of this kind after New York City.
